Scouter Training Tracking Sheet

Adult Leader Training -- New Leaders

Youth Protection Training -- All adult leaders are required to take Boy Scout Youth Protection training before registering as an adult leader. The training is good for two years and is available on the Web at www.myscouting.org

Boy Scout Fast Start Training -- This is the first course taken by all adult leaders that specifically looks at the Boy Scout program.  Fast Start training is a quick orientation designed to help you get ready for your first Boy Scout meeting. The training is available on the Web at www.myscouting.org .

Training for Scoutmasters & Assistant Scoutmasters -- All adult leaders, regardless of their position in the troop, are greatly encouraged to attend a training program for adult leaders comprised of three parts: This is Scouting, Leader Specific Training for Scoutmasters & Assistant Scoutmasters, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. This is Scouting is available on the Web at www.myscouting.org.  Leader Specific Training is taught during one Saturday. The Outdoor Leader Skills portion is an overnight camping experience that begins at 6:00 PM on a Friday and concludes by 5:00 PM the next day. The program is offered at the district level and you can attend a session offered by any district in our council. Yolo District generally offers this course in October and in February.  The course assumes that the adult has never been associated with Scouting and takes the participant through administrative and outdoor activities. By the end of the course, you will have learned a lot and feel confident about what is going on in Scouting.  It is well worth your time.  If you are interested, check the troop calendar and see the committee chairman for more information.

Wood Badge is the advanced training program for all adult leaders involved in BSA programs.  There are two parts (phases) to the Wood Badge experience:

Practical Phase:  A two weekend experience of living in an outdoor environment with a group of Scouters while being exposed to leadership skills that are applicable to the development of both the participant and the scouts we serve. Through this living/working environment you develop a knowledge and understanding of various leadership skills: what they are, how to use them, when each is appropriate, plus an intense personal motivation to apply these skills in your Scouting position.

Application Phase: This phase follows the practical experience. During this phase you will carry out commitments made during the practical phase and your leadership skills will be evaluated. Throughout this phase you are guided by a counselor who serves as a mentor. That person determines when you fully understand the skills and can apply them in the betterment of your Scouting position. The time period allowed to complete your final certification is a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 18 months following the practical phase.
